Who we are and what we do
The ELEPHANT ANTI-POACHING PATROL is an organization of people of different nationalities who have dedicated themselves to protect and preserve the elephants of Central African Republic from the violent and criminal elements intent on exploiting and annihilating the remaining pachyderms. The Patrol is the field operations component of DOLI: ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONALE pour la PROTECTION des ÉLÉPHANT et la CONSERVATION de la FAUNE SAUVAGE en RÉPUBLIQUE CENTRAFRICAINE. DOLI is "elephant" in Sangho, the most widely spoken language in Central African Republic.
Francis Mollet, the leader of the field operations team, is a Frenchman who has spent many years in Africa and in wilderness areas throughout the World. The Patrol owes its existence to Francis Mollet and his courageous effort to stop the slaughter of elephants by poachers who kill the elephants for ivory to sell to illegal markets in Asia. Extremely well qualified to lead this Patrol, Mollet has been conducting and leading anti-poaching patrols in Central Africa against armed and dangerous bandit elements. His background in law enforcement and the military include service in the French Naval Fusiliers and French Army. An avid outdoorsman and hunter, he knows at first-hand the need to preserve wildlife and wilderness areas for the future of the World.
The members of the Patrol who are in the bush and do most of the dangerous but necessary patrolling are composed of local tribesmen. These men are recruited to protect the existing elephant herds and to protect them from poachers. Their duties include tracking and arresting the criminal elements in their area of operation and monitoring the activities and habitat of the elephants. In addition, the Patrol use their limited resources to provide rudimentary medical and health services to the local population and assist in building and repairing the infrastructure in the remote interior of the country. The Patrol is not part of the Government of Central African Republic and have no official status as a law enforcement or para-military organization. They receive meagre salaries and provisions from the organization's resources which come from donations from people from all over the World.
